Frugal Gardening Tips: Go Big!

Welcome to Part one of my Frugal Gardening series!

When we moved in there was one sad, sad garden in the front of the house. Of course I immediately decided that I needed to turn my entire property into a BHG-worthy garden paradise.

Unfortunately I’ve yet to win the lottery.
For those of you not familiar with landscaping, it can get really expensive, really fast. Especially with perennials and shrubbery.
I’ve put together a few tips that I’ll be sharing over the next few weeks on frugal gardening.

This tip may sound misleading.
After all, shouldn’t big plants cost more?
Yes, but…
The key is to buy one big plant that can be divided into several small ones.

This bleeding heart cost about $8 from Lowes.
For me, that’s a lot of money for something that I can’t eventually eat.

But by carefully selecting which plant to bring home I ended up with not one, but 3 medium sized divisions. (I also got 2 small pieces that will eventually be moved back into the garden, more on that later!) You can try to carefully pull the plants apart or slice them with apart with a knife. Not all of the bleeding hearts were this full, I had to pick my way through a table full!

A few days later they seem to be settling in nicely.
$8 to plant 1/3 of a garden bed? Yes please!

There was mulch, but I have chickens

The semi-shade bed is pretty sparse but should fill in over the next few years (patience is a virtue wit cheap gardening) with hostas, bleeding hearts, astible and coral bells.
